Meet Mary, Marcus & Archie

The Ghostly Trio

Mary – is a little witch (about 11”) who stands on the plinth with her gentlemen friends. I think they might just get on her nerves a bit! Mary holds them together, she is the one who helped them in their afterlives. They cannot do without her

Marquis de Latourette – or as Mary calls him – Marcus. The Marquis just sounds so stuffy.
Marcus’ name is French: a diminutive of Latour. A topographic name for someone who lived near a tower, usually a defensive fortification or watchtower, from Old French tūr; or a habitational name from various places called Latour or La Tour. This is a French Canadian secondary surname, which has also been used independently since 1705.
Marcus got caught during the Reign of Terror (The Reign of Terror (5 September 1793 – 28 July 1794), also known as The Terror (French: la Terreur), was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between rival political factions, the Girondins and the Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of "enemies of the revolution". The death toll ranged in the tens of thousands, with 16,594 executed by guillotine (2,639 in Paris),[2] and another 25,000 in summary executions across France.)
Marcus was beheaded and his head somehow managed to NOT be buried with him! As a ghost he met Mary and she decided that a pumpkin head was better than no head at all! So now with his head he measures 14”.
Archibald “Sonny” Adderley - English: habitational name from either of two places called Adderley, in Staffordshire and Shropshire; the former is named with the Old English personal name Ealdrēd + Old English lēah ‘woodland clearing’, while the latter has as the first element the Old English female personal name
Everyone just calls him Archie – poor Archie’s life is a sad one. His looks were nothing to rave about and he died sad and lonely and alone. A very small man (he was only 12”) and insecure. When he came back as a ghost, at his request, Mary helped him hide his features. He carries a mask to hide himself further.
So on Halloween, the one night the trio can roam around in public, they go from house to house, asking for sweets. Mary’s bag is a large one and ready to be filled to the brim.
Mary's & Marcus' heads are made with foil covered with paperclay, molded, sanded several times, painted. The features are then added and the whole is coated with Paverpol. Archie is paperclay covered wire and foil, then silk gauze layers. The gauze was painted in spots.
Their clothes are all wool felt and cotton, hand-sewn, machine sewn, hand embroidered and beaded all by me.

They stand on a log "slice" that was cut from the woods near my house; the slice measures approximately 8 1/2" round

The dolls arms and legs are made from heavy wire, covered in a layer of tape, then wrapped in batting strips, then the outer layer. Holes are drilled into the wood and the wires inserted and glued.
